Sp\u00e4testens 1985 kaufte ich, siebzehnj\u00e4hrig, in den USA an einem Flughafen (New Mexico, vielleicht?) das schmale B\u00fcchlein Murphy’s Law, and other reasons why things go wrong!<\/em> von Arthur Bloch. Ich habe viel gelernt daraus. Murphy’s Law kannte ich wohl vorher schon irgendwoher, anderen Gesetzen – dem Peter-Prinzip, Clarkes 3. Gesetz – begegnete ich danach immer wieder. Aber ich wei\u00df noch, dass es lange dauerte, bis ich diesen Kalauer verstand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hier die Gesetze, die ich \u00fcber all die Jahre auswendig behalten habe, weil ich immer wieder Anwendungen daf\u00fcr sehe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ginsberg’s Theorem:
1. You can’t win.
2. You can’t break even.
3. You can’t even quit the game.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Das ist eine saloppe Kurzfassung der drei Haupts\u00e4tze der Thermodynamik: 1. Die Gesamtenergie in einem geschlossenen System bleibt konstant, 2. aber weil die Entropie st\u00e4ndig zunimmt, kann man nicht mal ein Perpetuum Mobile bauen, und den 3. Hauptsatz verstehe ich zu wenig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das kann man auf so viele Dinge anwenden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wenn man das mit „Mach ein System narrensicher“ \u00fcbersetzt, kann man das auch auf die Sicherheitseinstellungen in schulischen Netzen anwenden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Westheimer’s rule:
To estimate the time it takes to do a task: estimate the time you think it should take, multiply by 2 and change the unit of measure to the next highest unit. Thus we allocate 2 days for a one-hour task.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ich halte diese Regel f\u00fcr etwas zu scharf formuliert, aber im Kern richtig. Und deshalb bin ich auch recht gut in meiner Zeitplanung und falle nicht dem Planungsfehlschluss anheim (engl. planning fallacy): das ist „die Tendenz von Menschen und Organisationen, zu untersch\u00e4tzen, wie viel Zeit sie zur Vollendung einer Aufgabe ben\u00f6tigen“ (Wikipedia). Wenn man sch\u00e4tzt, wie lange man f\u00fcr etwas braucht, liegt man oft daneben – und zwar jedesmal wieder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich sch\u00e4tze auch, wie lange ich f\u00fcr etwas brauche. Aber dann misstraue ich meiner Sch\u00e4tzung, weil ich aus Erfahrung wei\u00df, wie sehr meinem Gef\u00fchl nicht zu trauen ist, und passe sie an, so \u00e4hnlich wie bei Westheimers Regel. Das war schon beim r\u00fcckw\u00e4rts Einparken so: Wenn ich da beim Blick nach hinten das Gef\u00fchl hatte, es geht nicht mehr weiter — dann musste ich noch etwa einen Meter mehr fahren, und dann stand das Auto richtig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
