I had called upon my friend Sherlock Holmes upon the second morning after Christmas, with the intention of wishing him the compliments of the season. He was lounging upon the sofa in a purple dressing-gown, a pipe-rack within his reach upon the right, and a pile of crumpled morning papers, evidently newly studied, near at hand. Beside the couch was a wooden chair, and on the angle of the back hung a very seedy and disreputable hard-felt hat, much the worse for wear, and cracked in several places. A lens and a forceps lying upon the seat of the chair suggested that the hat had been suspended in this manner for the purpose of examination.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

So beginnt „The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle“, aus dem das Englischbuch meiner 8. Klasse „The Adventure of the Blue Diamond“ macht; auch sonst ist die Geschichte der Jahrgangsstufe entsprechend verk\u00fcrzt und vereinfacht. Auch im Original ist der Anfang dieser Geschichte recht kurz, viel weniger gem\u00fctlich, als ich die Anf\u00e4nge in Erinnerung habe. Und ein kurzer Test hat gezeigt: Ja, die Holmes-Geschichten steigen fast alle in medias res<\/em> ein, mit ein, zwei Zeilen Beschreibung oder gleich w\u00f6rtlicher Rede. In meinem Kopf fangen die Geschichten n\u00e4mlich so an:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was in the latter days of September, and the equinoctial gales had set in with exceptional violence. All day the wind had screamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that even here in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced to raise our minds for the instant from the routine of life and to recognize the presence of those great elemental forces which shriek at mankind through the bars of his civilization, like untamed beasts in a cage. As evening drew in, the storm grew higher and louder, and the wind cried and sobbed like a child in the chimney.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Aber da ist „The Five Orange Pips“ tats\u00e4chlich eine Ausnahme – und es ist der dritte Absatz, nicht der unmittelbare Beginn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyway: Den etwas kargen Anfang der Erz\u00e4hlung im Schulbuch sollten die Sch\u00fclerinnen und Sch\u00fcler der 8. Klasse erweitern – da noch ein S\u00e4tzchen, da noch eine Beschreibung, Mrs Hudson begr\u00fc\u00dfen, ein bisschen mehr Licht und Geruch und Wohnung beschreiben (t\u00fcrkischer Pantoffel und so weiter). So ein bisschen wie die Oulipo-Technik des larding<\/em>,<\/a> wo man nach und nach immer wieder zus\u00e4tzliche S\u00e4tze zwischen gegebene S\u00e4tze packt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Und das ging sehr gut – vielleicht auch nur, weil die Ergebnisse vorgelesen wurden und ich die Rechtschreibung nicht sah? Die kurzen Texte waren jedenfalls sehr stimmungsvoll, w\u00fcrde ich glatt lesen. Au\u00dferdem \u00fcbt man so die Aussprache von „Holmes“ ohne das „l“, und \u00fcbertr\u00e4gt das bitte gleich auf „Lincoln“, wo auch ohne „l“.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ansonsten habe ich den t\u00e4glichen Morgenwecker ausgestellt und das automatische abendliche Ausschalten des NAS-Systems um zwei Stunden nach hinten verlegt: Ferien.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
