A Singularly Energetick Potpourri of Some 4,000 of the Most Entertaining and Historically Stimulating English Words and Definitions from Abactor to Zootomy Extracted from the World&#8217;s Foremost Feat of Lexikography Selected by the Superexcellent Linguist and Verbally Gymnastick David Crystal<\/em> gebl\u00e4ttert &#8211; eine gek\u00fcrzte Ausgabe von Samuel Johnsons ber\u00fchmten W\u00f6rterbuch von 1744. Hier ein paar Fundst\u00fccke daraus, bekannte und weniger bekannte:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>JOB.<\/strong> n.s. [A low word now much in use, of which I cannot tell the etymology.]<br>\n1. Petty, piddling work; a piece of chance work.<br>\n2. A low mean lucrative busy affair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>KI&#8217;SSINGCRUST.<\/strong> n.s. [kissing and crust.] Crust formed where one loaf of bread in the oven touches another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LA.<\/strong> interject. [corrupted by an effeminate pronunciation from <i>lo<\/i>.] See; look; behold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>LEXICO&#8217;GRAPHER.<\/strong> n.s. A writer of dictionaries; a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the significaion of words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>OATS.<\/strong> n.s. [<em>aten<\/em>, Saxon.] A grain, which in England is generally given to horses, but in Scotland supports the people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PENGUIN.<\/strong> n.s.<br>\n1. A bird. This bird was found with this name, as is supposed, by the first discoverers of America; and <i>penguin<\/i> signifying in Welsh a white head, and the head of this fowl being white, it has been imagined, that America was peopled from Wales.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Und wenn man ein bisschen in etymologischen W\u00f6rterb\u00fcchern nachschaut: die Herkunft von <em>penguin<\/em> ist tats\u00e4chlich unklar, die einzige Theorie, die ich gefunden habe, nennt ebenfalls das walisische &#8222;wei\u00dfer Kopf&#8220;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Ansonsten genie\u00dfe ich jetzt erst mal die Ferien. Ein paar sch\u00f6ne Blogintr\u00e4ge habe ich noch im Kopf, aber zum Aufschreiben fehlt mir die Zeit.
