Transom<\/a> ist eine Seite, die amerikanische Amateur-Rundfunkbeitr\u00e4ge ver\u00f6ffentlicht, und das schon seit vielen Jahren. Bevor es Podcasts gab, war das eine meiner sch\u00f6nsten Quellen f\u00fcr gut gemachtes Tonbeitr\u00e4ge; es gab nicht viel, aber sehr gutes Material.
Transom bringt Radiobeitr\u00e4ge, die den Anspr\u00fcchen des \u00f6ffentlichen Rundfunks entsprechen, also sauber produziertes, intelligentes Material, mit technischen Angaben \u00fcber die Aufnahmeger\u00e4te und -bedingungen f\u00fcr die Liebhaber. (Zu meiner Freude sehe ich, dass es inzwischen auch einen Podcast mit ausgesuchtem Material gibt. Wunderbar, gleich abonniert.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00dcber Transom bin ich vor allem auf The Little Gray Book Lectures<\/a> gesto\u00dfen, und um die geht es mir heute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die schlechte Nachricht vorweg: Die Little Gray Book Lectures gibt es der urspr\u00fcnglichen Form nicht mehr<\/a>. Das zwaren zweist\u00fcndige bunte Abende in diversen Bars oder Pubs (in Williamsburg, Brooklyn), mit vier Vortr\u00e4gen pro Veranstaltungen. Anders gesagt: „TWO HOUR INSTRUCTIONAL VARIETY SHOW, often involving POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS, ACCORDIONS AND DOGS.“
Veranstalter und Gestalter waren John Hodgman und Jonathan Coulton<\/a>, dazu kamen Gastredner und Gastmusiker. Eine Pilot-Aufnahme gibt es bei Transom,<\/a> und Ausschnitte aus anderen Lectures<\/a> gibt es, angereichert mit irrwitziger Rahmenhandlung, bei LGB (auch als Podcast, es wird aber wohl bei den bisherigen sieben Beitr\u00e4gen bleiben).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Die Lectures sind eine Parodie auf erzieherische und bildende Vortragsreihen und Brosch\u00fcren aus der ersten H\u00e4lfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Themen sind drahtlose Kommunikation, Rollenspiele (mit Live-Spiel auf dem Podium), Vorteile des gemeinschaftlichen \u00f6ffentlichen Singens, die wenig bekannte Musikrichtung des spy rock<\/em>. (Das erinnert mich an die Einladung zum Essen bei mir, bei der jeder Gast ein kurzes Referat zum Thema „Was ich schon immer sagen wollte, was mich aber noch niemand gefragt hat“ halten musste.)
Wert gelegt wird auf audience participation<\/em>, Abwechslung, Musik, Skurillit\u00e4t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aber wie bei allen guten Votr\u00e4gen habe ich auch Einiges gelernt: Zum einen, dass George Washington nicht<\/em> der erste Pr\u00e4sident der USA ist. Details gibt es in dieser Roadside Attraction<\/a>, aber die Kurzfassung: Washington wurde Pr\u00e4sident im Jahr 1790. Die Unabh\u00e4ngigkeitserkl\u00e4rung war 1776. Was war eigentlich in der Zeit dazwischen? 1781 gab es die Articles of Confederation, den Vorg\u00e4nger der Constitution. Unter diesem Vorg\u00e4nger gab es acht Pr\u00e4sidenten, George Washington war (lediglich) der erste unter der aktuellen, noch heute g\u00fcltigen Verfassung. Da ist doch auch irgendwo eine Facharbeit drin versteckt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weiterhin habe ich von Mrs Favell Lee Mortimer erfahren. Geboren 1802 in London, Bestseller-Kinderbuchautorin, unter anderem von „The Peep of Day; or: a Series of the Earliest Religious Instructions the Infant Mind is Capable of Receiving“ – die Zitate daraus haben mich dazu gebracht, das Buch gleich zu besorgen.
Vor allem hat sie aber drei B\u00fccher \u00fcber Europa und die Welt geschrieben, ebenfalls f\u00fcr Kinder, und das ohne jemals diese L\u00e4nder gesehen zu haben. Das erste ist The Countries of Europe Described<\/em> (1849), kommentierte und mit einem Vorwort versehene Ausz\u00fcge aus allen B\u00e4nden gibt es in The Clumsiest People in Europe<\/a><\/em>. Ein paar Proben ohne besondere Reihenfolge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siam:
Cross a river, and you pass from Burmah to Siam. These two countries, like most countries close together, have quarreled a great deal, and now Britain has got in between them, and has parted them: as a nurse might come and part two quarrelsome children. […] The Siamese resemble the Burmese in appearance, but they are much worse-looking. Their faces are very broad and flat; and so large are the jaws under the ears, that they appear as if they were swollen. What? Though the Portuguese are indolent, like the Spnaiards, they are not so grave, and sad, and silent. They are proud like the Spaniards, but they are more deceitful. They have black eyes, and hair, and dark complexions liek the Spaniards, but they have whiter teeth, for they never smoke, and it is smoking paper cigars which spoils the teeth in Spain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Scotland:
One day a traveller said to a Scotchman, „Does it always rain, as it does now?“ „No,“ replied the man, „it snaws sometimes.“
He said „snaws,“ instead of „snows,“ for the poor Scotch speak their words very broad.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Germany:
I cannot say the cottages are very pleasant. The lower room is the cow’s stable. This would be well if the upper room was clean; but it is not. As the women are so much out of doors, they do not keep the house clean. There is a dresser with the shelves, beds with curtains, and a stove; but all is dirty and uncomfortable.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Borneo:
This is the largest island in the world, except one. Borneo is a heathen island. Yet Borneo is not an island of idols<\/em>, as Ceylon is. All<\/em> heathens do not worship idols.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Madrid:
This city is built just in the middle of Spain.
The king, who chose Madrid for his chief city, made a foolish choice; for it is far from the sea, and there is no great river near, only a little stream, so that ships cannot come near it. It is built also on a high plain, where very cold winds blow. It would not be well to go to Madrid in winter, it is so very windy, and there are no good plans for keeping the houses warm. In summer it is very hot.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

(Mit den letzten Aussagen hat diese Florence Foster Jenkins der Reiseliteratur sogar recht.) Wunderbar ist der erzieherische, chauvinistische, arrogante Tonfall; jedes Land kriegt sein Fett weg. Soviel zum britischen Empire. Auch hier k\u00f6nnte mal eine Facharbeit daraus werden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich habe mir \u00fcbrigens doch noch eine vollst\u00e4ndige Ausgabe aus dem 19. Jahrundert besorgt, hier<\/a> kann man nach gebrauchten, auch antiquarischen B\u00fcchern schauen. Im Moment gibt es da nur eine Ausgabe des Buches, und auch die vielleicht nur, weil der Name der Autorin f\u00e4lschlicherweise als „Morimer“ eingegeben wurde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Das alles hat \u00fcbrigens dazu gef\u00fchrt, dass ich mir ein Buch von John Hodgman<\/a> und zwei Platten von Jonathan Coulton<\/a> bestellt habe. Die sehen auch sehr spannend aus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
